new skill

Was forced to pick up a new skill today - driving through pouring rain with non-functional wipers. I had to drive for 2 hours like that. I got out of the car all cross-eyed and with a hint of headache.

The trick is to focus on the tail lights of other cars and the white lines, and keep your distance. And, possibly counterintuitively, driving faster or getting take over by big trucks splashing water all around actually helps in this situation.

  1. You just love to live dangerously, don’t you? First you walk around for 6months with a gruesome teeth infection, and now this!

  2. Little trick (but useless if you’re not an smoker or if you don’t drive with an smoker): rip apart a cigarette, and rub the tobacco in the windshield. This will improve your vision considerably.

Learned when I was a kid and my mother (who smokes) used a really old Volkswagen sedan without wipers (it was really old and always one step from breaking totally apart). And it rains a lot in Mexico City.

  3. Hey, that’s a skill that comes by default in motorcycle riders.

Another trick is to turn your high lights on all the time so other drivers keep the safety distance, either because they think you are really close or just because you annoy them with the lights.
