wordpress I hate you

After seeing that I possibly might have had some exploits run on my site again, I upgraded to wordpress 2.8

After reading up on hardening wordpress, the official site mentions AskApache, some plugin that helps hardening. I'm not too sure about it yet, because it wants to be writing .htaccess files in my directories and for that I have to open up more than I would want. But hey, let's give it a go.

At some point it creates a username and password that you choose. I go on and configure stuff, not knowing very well which of its many modules I'm supposed to activate, or why.

I forget about it, and ten minutes later I check my mail. I have a mail from AskApache. With my login details. And the password in plaintext.

...

Is the WordPress security model just fundamentally broken ?

read order

A few weeks ago a few neurons tragically misfired, causing me to click a buy button on a 20 item shopping cart at Amazon.

Really, I just wanted to buy Overqualified, after reading how Joey sold out his first run already and realizing I did not want to wait for a second print. But somehow I thought I'd optimize my costs if I added some more stuff from my wishlist.

Anyway, the post office had trouble finding the books I had ordered. Probably because instead of a normal box, the books were packaged in this:
71068

Inside was the traditional Amazon box:
71071
Sadly, things that look like a bag are thrown around like a bag. The soft carton inside the bag was not strong enough to protect the books inside of being damaged.

If your spine reading is good, you can see what I ended up ordering:
71077

The problem is I already had stuff I still have to read; I have a special hole in my bookshelf just for that:
71074

Maybe it's time for another week of stay-at-home-holiday...

Finally

After more than two years, I finally finished reading my second Spanish novel. This one was 'Zorro' by Isabel Allende. I assume it's different from her usual work. I obviously bit off more than I could chew, with a 380 page novel in small letters and very little whitespace. But I will persevere. Next!

weekend

Had a both relaxing and tiring weekend. Instead of going to Gent on Friday evening and see Venus in Flames play at the Charlatan, I stayed home and watched Risky Business instead - a movie that's been on my to-see list since forever. It was actually more explicit than I expected, and for an 80's movie not too bad.

Saturday I took the train to Gent (Kristien's car is still towed after someone took it for a joyride) to spend the afternoon sewing with Tamara. I'm finally finishing a rust-brown pullover I started only seven years ago. At this pace it'll be back in fashion by the time it's done.

After that, we went out for a tango milonga at the usual place. And after that, a party at the place where I spent my sundays as a boy scout from 12 to 18. On the way there we drove past the house of my first girlfriend (when I was 11), so I looked her up on Facebook and tagged her. Then I got nostalgic and looked up the first girl I kissed, she was there too. Maybe this is my mind's way of telling me that it's high time Kristien got back from India.

Do we have any more selfish goal in life than to be remembered by the people we've loved ? People only truly die when there is no one around anymore to remember them.

Sunday morning I spent fixing my parents' home network, trying to find my dad's computer (which broke again, after he fried both his hard drives of his software raid and I used an expensive company for data recovery), which he either misplaced somewhere in the house or had stolen when the garage door was left open.

Then back on the train to Brussels, confused again by the Brussels metro system that is about to change completely in April (for the worse, as far as I can tell), and watched The smartest guys in the room, a documentary on the Enron scandal. I particularly gasped at the part about how they held California hostage to take money, impressive hack.

Now I'm done disconnecting, time to sleep under the watchful eyes of Paloma.

I was considering to defiantly refuse any admonitions to correct one of my most common spelling mistakes, but when a close friend decided to go past his self-imposed boundaries of passive-agressivenessaggressiveness to complain, I caved and replaced all occurencesoccurrences of 'definately' with 'definitely'. That is, except for the two in this post.

I will try better in the future, promise! And to my friend in particular, I'm sorry I daintified our relationship.
