One of my favourite free software-related ones is skipping through the freshmeat RSS feed.

"GNU Moe is a powerful, 8-bit clean text editor for ISO-8859 and ASCII character encodings."

Is there anyone left who even wants to use an editor that doesn't do UTF-8 ?

  1. Yes, there are such people. They are perfectly happy using iso8859-2 in whole system and applications and are unwilling to have UTF-8 taint it. They are happy with XMMS and such. They don’t need UTF-8. Adding unicode support to existing programs is hard, magnitude more harder that adding locale support (been there, done that). There are people who do not need or want to have “.UTF-8” appended to their LC_*.

  2. Someone even packaged it for Debian, but for once sanity won and it was removed before it had even reached the package archive.

  4. I know plenty of people who don’t want to use mail clients or terminal applications which will do UTF-8, sadly.
