wordpress and comments

Every time I want to reply to a comment on my blog I am stupefied at how badly commenting works in WordPress.

Here's what I can't figure out:

  • Why can't I comment on a specific comment and start a thread of discussion ?
  • Why can't I easily quote some other comment ?
  • Why can't I comment from the admin interface ?

But these probably are relatively minor. The number one thing that annoys me is how this comment system does not help at all in creating a discussion. It would be so much better if, assuming there was a way to comment on a specific comment:

  • your comment to someone else's comment would get automatically mailed to that person (if he left his email)
  • that mail contained a link that would take him to "create a new comment on this comment"

This way, you can keep a discussion going without too much mental friction. Imagine how I would have to do it now - I would have to comment in general (using the @ symbol to indicate at which commenter I'm directing my comment), send them a mail (hey, I saw your comment, and replied), cut and paste my comment or send them a link to it, and ask them their opinion. Then if they still cared enough, they would give it to me, I'd have to ask them if they're ok with posting their comment again, and then manually post it again. And so on.

Right now often I don't reply because I'm pretty much sure these people aren't spending their free time going back to comments they've written to see if they got a response. So much possibility for goodness wasted...

My hope is that one of you knows of a plug-in that just Does The Right Thing here. Care to share ?

I have a few images on my disk which I used for a talk and got off of Flickr. For some of them I can't find them again on Flickr. Is there any way I can easily find the original links for these images ? Does Flickr have some sort of upload-and-recognize feature (which would be *awesome*) ? Or is there some other way, given the file I have ?

CPU usage is currently expressed as the percentage of time spent running
during the entire lifetime of a process. This is not ideal, and it does not
conform to the standards that ps otherwise conforms to. CPU usage is unlikely
to add up to exactly 100%.

This explains why my nagios checks for processes with >90% CPU use doesn't work.

It's logical when you think it through, but the nagios check is very misleading because it doesn't mention this at all, just talks about CPU.

Sigh, let's try with sar instead.

external USB/Firewire drive

I want to buy a big external hard drive (500 GB or more), but I want it to be USB-powered (or Firewire-powered - if that exists) so I only have to plug one cable to have it work. My small Passport drive does this just fine. The external drives I've seen in the store don't mention at all if they do this, and all of them come with a power supply. (I assume it's completely possible to have either work, and that would be fine by me).

Anyone who's bought these things can tell me which ones are USB-powered ?

sabbat part 3

Yesterday evening I made my first sale-through-the-web - An older man in a very nice suit came by to buy the Robin CD shelf for 10 euro. He didn't look like the kind of guy that collects CD's or needs to buy shelves second hand, but I didn't ask what he was going to do with it. And now I regret not asking - I seem to have a need to know what happens to stuff I stop using and give away.

Anyway, because Fons asked, my other items on Kapaza are:

  • industrial vacuum cleaner(I just *know* we're going to need it as soon as it gets sold)
  • my back-friendly chair(Painful to get rid of as it has served me so well, but it damages the parquet floor we have now)
  • microwave(when you've had a few different places between you and your girlfriend you tend to accumulate microwaves - we already gave one away)
  • My prized TV closet - our new TV's outgrown it.

Registered friends get a 20% discount on every item as long as they permanently give up the right to complain about the sale once made!
